Allow me to introduce myself: My name is Mattea, I'm in my late 20s, I am German and I just moved to San Jose 2,5 months ago. One thing I love about America is the food! Germans barely eat out and we don't have Mexican food (which is absolutely scandalous). Instead we have a lot of kabob and gyro and döner - a lot of meat-based food as you can probably imagine. I have been a vegetarian for 2 years now and I find it relatively hard to find vegetarian take-away in Germany. However, I find it a lot easier to cook for myself back home. That probably has to do with the fact that there are so many take-away options available in the US. So being here for 2,5 months, I have eaten my way through quite a few restaurants in San Jose and that's why today I would like to tell you about my top 5, veggie-friendly restaurants.
1. Patxi's Pizza
Patxi's is a great place for deep dish pizza (another thing we don't have in Germany). They even make vegan pizza and it tastes amazing! Once you went there, you will want to come back! That also explains why there is often a pretty long wait until you get seated. People usually get a pie and share it, but Patxi's also does take-away. Just call ahead and then pick it up once it's ready. On a sidenote: I tried to make deep dish pizza myself twice and failed. If anyone can tell me how I stop my pizza from running and instead get it to be firm, I'd greatly appreciate your advice!
2. The Vegetarian House
This place is very special. And I mean that. The food is amazing and all vegan and relatively cheap. I looooved their pad-thai that I had! And they serve fresh coconut milk out of a coconut! I don't know about you, but that's a pretty rare thing for us Germans to have. I'd literally go every day if I could! However, when I went, I was under the impression that the place is run by a cult. They have pictures of this blonde lady all over the place, who seems to be their very own vegan Tom Cruise. If you don't mind a little creepy, you should definitely go and enjoy all their amazing meals.
3. El Abuelo
Give me all your burritos! This place to me is the best Mexican place for vegetarians in San Jose. I loved Freebird's but they closed down. And so one of my co-workers told me about El Abuelo in Willow Glen which I obviously had to try out! They have a big salsa bar and free chips which is always a bonus! Try the california burrito with fries in it - It is amazing! I didn't finish mine because I was way too full way too quickly. Take me back now for round 2!
4. Plant-based Pizza
Here's another pizza place that I can recommend. It's all vegan and they do mostly deliveries. There's a couple of tables in there too but if you're unlucky, they might be taken already. If you're a vegan/veggie and yet like pretend meat, go with the meatlover pizza. Even my boyfriend (who is a full on carnivore) loved it and felt really full afterwards.
5. Islands
This surf/Hawaiian-themed burger restaurant swept me off my feet last weekend! I didn't even know about this place and we only went there by chance because Freebird's (which was close to it) had closed down. Anyway, their veggie burgers are the best! They're huge and the burger actually tastes like they made it fresh. I had a Hawaiian burger with fresh pineapple. America, this is why I love you! You have the best burgers and fries in the world!
Great, now I got myself all worked up and hungry... :(

My name is Mattea, I'm in my late 20s and I am from Germany. I moved to San Jose, CA in February as I am doing an internship at an event management company. In Germany I go to school and study International Tourism Management (it sounds way more interesting than it actually is). I started blogging only three months ago and have been enjoying it very much. My blog posts are about all kinds of things, obviously travelling but also food and girl problems/survival tips. If you enjoy or hate my posts, feel free to shoot me a comment or message me on facebook. I always love getting to know new people!
