Once or twice a month there is a unique event in West Oakland hosted by a little hobby shop deemed Mary Weather. The event consists of an open mic session or jam session for anyone willing to show up and be respectful of the vibe. I personally attended this event a few times to break out my clarinet and guitar (not simultaneously) and jammed along with my fellow Oakland residents (or visitors). Lately the music scene has migrated it’s way to little Oakland where musicians can play freely without scrutiny of those attempting to rest to wake at 6am and shuffle to work. In Oakland there has always been a vibrant culture and different way of life that San Francisco has never sustained. Knowing this, many artists have began booking shows in Oakland in the new up & coming bar scene on Telegraph (towards Jack London) and also in the underground scene.
With San Francisco’s housing market on the rise to the point working joe’s are being priced out of there homes, artists have no where to turn aside from the outskirts of San Francisco to spread their sound. Which just a few years back Oakland wasn’t on anyone’s minds of living there as opposed to just passing through. But as the times change as technology and job markets migrate, San Francisco is now more of a place to call home as opposed to a place to go out and hit the club therefore artists’ moving to the other side of the bay is a smart move economically.

We're opening the Oakland studio because all art is going to Oakland. Oakland is the future of all art in San Francisco. It has the space, it has the buildings, it has the infrastructure, and it has the energy. It has the vibe. -JOHN VANDERSLICE
As good as it is for artists to move to Oakland, there is still the threat of gentrification to predominantly black city with rising housing costs as everyone’s let in on the secret that is moving to Oakland. “Certainly, the not-being-able-to-afford San Francisco started the whole ball rolling in a big way [moving to Oakland], but now I feel like people are moving over here because they want to get in on the party” said Mitsakos, 37, a senior software engineer at Rockbot Inc.
There’s certainly something always going on in Oakland now with the influx of the social scene to downtown, and word spreading fast about affordable rest (about $350 a month!), the long time residents better get used to the new company or hit the highway! Change is coming!
